  1. Default Crossing the south coast

We have a rough plan from Houston to Miami, to head out via San Antonio and Dallas (to meet friends), then to duck down to New Orleans before seeing a bit of Georgia, then down to Miami. The core journey is 2200 miles and we have allowed 14 days to complete. We have avoided looping up to Memphis (although) I am a big blues fan. Would really appreciate suggestions for must see stops and routes, especially as Brits we know so little about what's good about the southern states, other than the TV formula stuff.

    Many thanks, Michael

    Default For Your Consideration

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

First and foremost, you need to know that we don't believe in "must see stops and routes" around here. The only sites that you need to see are those that appeal to you - not to anyone else - and what someone else, myself included, might consider a "must see" you might consider a "miss at all costs". So, going on what you've told us, that you are music fans, specifically the blues, then you should be looking at the following. Be sure to check out who is performing in Austin TX while you're in the area. Austin has one of the most vibrant and varied music scenes around, and I'd be willing to bet you'll find at least a couple of blues oriented performers on the agenda there. The same is true of New Orleans. Although best known for jazz, it is probably your best bet for finding a variety of blues styles.

Other than those venues, a few other spots you might want to check out to see if they suit you would include the Gulf Islands National Seashore, Gainesville FL (home of the University of Florida), Daytona Beach (a NASCAR track, and a beach you can actually drive on), the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, and the Everglades either on your way to or as daytrip from Miami.

If you have interests other than the one you mentioned, speak up and we'll be glad to try to point you to some sites that might appeal to you rather than generic "must sees".
