Default Within a Few Hours of New York

There is, of course, quite a variety of places within relatively short driving distances of the New York metro area. If you are looking for nature settings you might want to look at Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area or the Catskills. If you're student of American literature, then Hartford CT with Mark Twain's house and next-door Harriet Beecher Stowe's house might be in order. If the Revolutionary War is of interest, a drive up the Hudson River Valley visiting West Point, Bennington, Fort William Henry. and perhaps even Crown Point and Fort Ticonderoga would suit you. There is no shortage of such possibilities within just a few hours of Irvington, which would make them ideal overnight RoadTrips. You just have to decide what interests you most.

There are several ways of doing it, but if you follow my directions you at least need to get to the I-86/I-390 junction, then you can choose options.

I personally think you should defer a trip to Niagara Falls till you can take a 3 day weekend. One day up, one day back, and a whole day and 2 nights to enjoy yourself. This would also let you take different ways up and back and do a bit of sightseeing.
