We thought it might stump some of the regulars.

It is part of a geographical feature which is found all over the country.... in fact, all over the world. Just that there is a special reason for it being hilighted here. The monument out west, which is not a 'pile of rocks', is often referred to as a tourist trap.

Donna, you're not even off cold.

Default One more thing it is not

Well, that's not the geographic center of the lower 48 states, then.... Because the monument is 1/2 mile from the actual center -- roughly located in Lebanon, Kansas.

And this is not related -- but I found it when looking for this thing.... Look at the expression on this Grizz!

OK, you are killing me here....

Well, we can't have that... what would happen to the forum. But I do feel good stumping you. :)

Default There are 62 places where three states have a common point

Perhaps the place where three or more states touch? I'll look some more in 3-4 hours.

    Default MO, KS and OK.

It is a little off the beaten track, with just a small finger sign on the road, pointing to it. One of these things about which you learn when you speak with the locals. I was fortunate to be taken there.

There is a plague set in concrete as well, to mark the actual spot. The 'pile of rocks' had to be moved, though I can't recall why. I am sure there will be another post soon, with that explanation.

One of these little known spots of which I am sure there are millions around the country, and which I like to ferrett out wherever I can.

The pile of rocks was never moved - it was placed in the wrong position initially due to a surveying error. Very similar to 4 Corners, where the true 4 corners is a mile away from the monument.

    Default One of Jack's Tri-points!

Wow, you mean I was actually close to finding it? Amazing.

By the way, you might enjoy reading Jack Parsell's treatise on this subject. He is the one who identified the 62 places where three USA states touch one another at a common spot. And the one you've photographed was #19 on his list.

Here is his entry about this location....

    "...Date Visited: June 21, 1991
Access Route: From Interstate 44 in Missouri, get off at the exit for US-166. Go NW on SE 118th Street, a dead-end road, on the KS-MO line, for about 0.3 miles to a large stone cairn on the KS-OK road. A brass ring in the center of the broken up pavement, near the cairn is presumed to be the actual tri-point...."
There is a map of the location and more information about the survey.

So.... I might have figured it out eventually.....

    Nice work on the stumping...

Default A geo-challenge just for Lifey!

Actually, that would be a great challenge for someone to undertake. Get a photo of each of Parsell's Tri-points (only 61 more for Lifey still to capture...). Maps and directions to all 62 are available at the link in my previous post.

    Default Motorcycle Delight!

This is a road that has been discussed many times on this forum. It's generally not recommended for RVs, although it can be done. Do you recognize this view?

    1) Where are most road trippers heading if they are traveling on this road?
    2) This road has two names -- what are they?

Have browsed that book on numerous occasions, since the above photo was taken. Unfortunately, far too many are not accessible by car. Walking more than about half a city block is getting far too difficult these days. Furthermore, as you know, many are not on land.

But it definitely is the sort of challenge I am up for.

p.s. did you see the reference to five corners?
