Default hmmm both George and Lifey know this...

Hmmm, it's not the one-mile marker in DC....

But I bet it does designate something on a highway...

Rocks look like sedimentary in origin...

    no guesses yet.

Nothing to do with a highway or any road, for that matter. Neither is it anywhere near DC. Actually, it is not anywhere on the east side of the country.... nor on the west.

As hinted to by glc, it's sorta in the middle of the country. But there is a similar monument in the west which is very popular.

    Default Explorers of America?

    Good clues...

OK, another stab. Something related to exploration of the USA. Perhaps to Lewis and Clark.

    Default Not even warm

Me thinks you might have to think more laterally.....

Step out of the box, and take a different tack.. The western monument, is a comfortable day's drive from you.

I'm going out on a limb here. It reminds me a LOT of the Observation Tower at Grand Canyon's South Rim, the one designed by Mary Colter. She also designed a few of Fred Harvey's hotel and restaurant interiors, back in the day. I may be all off, though -- that's just what it reminds me of. It, too, is a day's drive from Mark in LV.

Clue: It's about 40 feet from where it really should be.
