  1. Default Memphis to Chattanooga via 64

We are planning a road trip: Nashville, Memphis, Chattanooga, Smokey Mountains, and back to Nashville.

We were thinking of taking I64 between Memphis and Chattanooga, and was wondering if anyone had suggestions for stopping.

we are three older women who like culture, history, eating, and scenery.

    warm regards,
    sheryl

ps this is my first road trip in 30 years.

    Default 64 in Southern Tennessee

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

I've driven large sections of US-64 (not I-64) in southern Tennessee, and must say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's not a super highway (yet), but the state is working hard on converting this entire road through some great scenic areas of the state from two to four lanes. There are some wonderful sites along it or not far from it, including Shiloh National Battlefield, the Jack Daniel Distillery, a Natural Bridge (at a fitness spa), access to the Natchez Trace Parkway, Laurel Hill Wildlife Management Area, and a few state parks. And then there is just the charm of those southern towns strung along it that will tempt you to skip the bypasses and just drive right through their centers.

Thank you for the information on US-64.

The Battlefield and Natural Bridge will make great stops.

Is there one town the sticks out from all the rest?

    regards,

Default A Couple That Could Work

I think from your descriptions of what you're looking for, you might like Savannah in western Tennessee and Winchester closer to Chattanooga. Both have old-style shopping centers downtown and are on the water, Savannah on the Tennessee River and Winchester on Tims Ford Lake.

They look perfect. Tennessee River Museum is right up our alley.

Thanks again. If I could help you with a New York City road trip, just let me know.. I know every street and avenue here.

    Warm Regards,

US 64 sounds like just the route I was looking for to travel through Tennessee off the interstate on my annual road trip from Boston to Tucson the first week of September. Does anyone know the extent of the construction delays as a result of the highway widening project? I looked on the Tennessee DOT website, but couldn't figure out how much of the project has been completed or in what areas they are currently working. Any advice would be appreciated.

Default The Best State Resource for Construction in Tennessee

You can get a map of all the current road construction projects in Tennessee at this site. Be sure to check the 'Construction' box at the left. You also need to be aware that US-64 across southern Tennessee is co-marked as TN-15, so any construction projects listed for TN-15 also apply to US-64.
