  1. Default Two week road trip from Maine

    Hi!
My friend and I are trying to plan a two week road trip for this June. We live on the coast in Maine and would love to see more of the US. We are crazy and adventurous and would love some ideas for a route! We want to include hiking, white water rafting, kayaking, etc. we aren't afraid to sleep in our car but would also like tenting out.
    thank you for the help!

Default Not unless it is designed to sleep in.

Hi Grace, and Welcome to the Great American Roadtrip Forum.

Others will no doubt have information on where to go to find the activities you mention. But sleeping in your car should not be an option. Unless the vehicle is set up with proper sleeping facilities, you will not get the rest your body (and mind) need to be a proficient and safe driver the following day. That is not even taking into account, that unless you are in a campground (or truckstop), it could be extremely dangerous. Two people in the average vehicle would be a very uncomfortable night, especially if it is a hot summer.

With a tent and sleeping bags, you will have no difficulty finding budget campgrounds in places like State Parks/Forests.

    Default Two Weeks from Maine

I once did nearly the entire country in three weeks from York, so you can cover quite a bit. But if you really want to spend some time in the outdoors, and not just in the car, then I'd strongly suggest that you limit yourselves to east of the Mississippi for your two weeks. I've written before describing a couple of routes along the east coast that could get you to Florida and back at a fairly pace over two weeks, but you may also want to look at crossing the Appalachians at some point and also taking in some of the sights on the far side of the mountains. Those would include Niagara Falls, Mammoth Cave, Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, the New River Gorge National River and the like.

And yes, the National Forests are one of the great underutilized camping and outdoors resources that the country has to offer.
