Smoky mountains Sept 2013

Hello

Planning a trip to the smoky mountains from Ohio, have about 3-5 days to go there and back from Ohio. I figure its about an 8 hour drive to get there and plan to do it in 1 day there and 1 day back, so I would have 2-3 days to actually be there.

Any one have any pointers on the best routes, once I get there, what to see and do?

I want to hike some, and stay at cheap hotels.

Sorry, without knowing where in Ohio you're starting from, there's no way I can advise you on a route that would be completely different if you were starting in the eastern or western portions of the state.

Once in the Great Smoky Mountains area, your first stop should be at the visitors center to get a trail map and the best advice on which trails are suited to your hiking style and fitness level. They will also have the best info on local conditions such as foliage and bear activity. You'll also want to check out the Cherokee and Pisgah National Forests.

Hi Brian,
This is one of the few national park sites that has a program for adults called the "Not-so-Junior" Ranger program. I understand it is at the Oconaluftee Visitor Center. It may be offered at others. This is great a great way to experience the park.
