Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!
When I lived in northern New England, I was always very appreciative of the fact that most people, including most New Yorkers, never seemed to realize how close we were. It's an easy half day's drive from New York City to Burlington in far northern Vermont, so you could have a very relaxed and rewarding RoadTrip that took no more time than a drive up, an overnight stay, and a drive back - visiting sites and enjoying the scenery as you go. That's the good news. Unfortunately however, late September is still a bit early to see good fall color, even in the Green Mountains of northern Vermont. So, would I suggest that you make the drive anyway? Of course! You'll still get a bit of fall's coolness. You'll still get wonderful scenery. But in recompense for not getting the best color (There'll still be some.) you will miss the clogged roads and full-up motels of peak 'leaf-peeping' season.

NY 22 and US 7 are two nice roads you can take one north the other south. Also can take US 9 to get some Hudson River valley in.
thank you.
