Car rental & drop off

[US to Canada]

I have friends from Norway who will be visiting U.S. & Canada this spring. He thought of renting a car in Newport R.I. and driving it to Toronto so they could see the countryside. I am not sure if this can be done, i.e., dropped off in a different country. Does anyone know?

It may be possible to find a company that will allow you to rent in rhode island and drop in toronto. However, any company that allows it will certainly charge a big extra fee for the cross border rental. You might be better off returning it in buffalo, and bussing the last few miles to toronto.

Of course, all one way rentals cost more, so it would be even Cheaper to drive back to providence.
