Advice o San Diego - NYC road trip

Hello! I am planning on driving SD to NYC , which is the fastest/safest route? We will be driving in the month of July (2013)... Thank you!!!

The fastest route is I-8/AZ-85/I-10/Loop-101/I-17/I-40/I-44/I-70/I-71/I-76/I-80. This will take you a minimum of 5 full days on the road, with overnights suggested:

Holbrook AZ
Amarillo TX
Rolla MO
Columbus OH

Suggested city bypasses:

Kilpatrick Turnpike around OKC (exact change toll, bring a handful of quarters, I think it's about $2.50)
I-270/I-255 south around STL
I-465 south around IND
I-270 north around Columbus

Adding to what GLC posted:

Going around St Louis by I-270 is highly recommended any time of the day.

We stayed on I-70 through Indianapolis, had no trouble. It will depend on the time of day and the day of the week you go through!

For Columbus, I'd agree with the I-270 suggestion as well.
