Eureka California to Lake Tahoe.

Can you please advise what would be the most scenic route to get from Eureka california to Lake Tahoe. We will have driven up the coast from San Francisco to view the redwoods and then want to move across to see Lake Tahoe area. Any suggestions would be welcome. From Lake Tahoe we will get back to the coast at San Francisco to finish the coastal drive down to Los Angeles. Thank you for your time.

I can't help with your actual question, but I would recommend [time permitting] that from Lake Tahoe you head south on 395 and enter Yosemite NP over the spectacular Tioga Pass [CA120] and spend a night there. You could then choose to head to Monterey/Carmel [rather than going back into San Fran] where the spectacular section of the coast highway around Big Sur begins.

If you are not on a time schedule, you could take either 299 to Redding or 36 to Red Bluff. These are both very hilly and winding mountain highways, and it will take you about 4 hours to get to I-5 from 101 via either one. From Redding you can take 44 (from Red Bluff you can stay on 36) to Susanville. Either way would give you the option of going through Lassen. From Susanville, take 395 to Reno, then it depends on exactly where in the Tahoe area you are going.

If you are on a time schedule and/or you don't want to deal with 100+ miles of hairpins, take 101 south to 20 to I-5, then either I-80 or US-50 out of Sacramento.

On our last road trip in the US we made it from Concord to Klamath in one day. We had lunch in Redding, then took 299 over. Made it to the Requa Inn in plenty of time for dinner.

While the road is curvy and mountainous, it wasn't a white-knuckler by any means. Along the way you can stop in Weaverville to do a little shopping and/or hit the Weaverville Joss House State Historic Park (closed for a ceremony when we were there) ... and Shasta State Historic Park (old gold-rush era ghost town, closer to Redding) as well.
