transport from Ronald Reagan Airport DC - Dulles and advice please

Hi can anybody tell me the best way to get from IAD to DCA we are in DC for several days but we want to get up to near Dulles and stay in a hotel there so we are close when we have to depart. The time we would be travelling is around 7.30pm on a Tuesday in August.

There are only two practical ways to get between National and Dulles Airports. The first is by public transport. That involves two subway and one bus lines (and two transfers). If you have luggage, or are unfamiliar with the DC Metro system, or time is a constraint, that is 'practical' in name only. The other way is by cab. While it has been a few years since I have taken a cab there (from Dulles into the District), I do remember them as being fairly reasonable when compared to other metropolitan taxi fares.

Am now wondering whether to hire a car for the couple of days we are there as we are finding the price of hotels in DC expensive, this would solve the issue of getting from airport to airport and also mean we could stay out of the city...will have to see!
