Camping road trip Los Angeles to Vancouver in early June

My husband and I are planning a camping road-trip from Los Angeles to Vancouver in early June. Does anyone have any recommendations for good campsites along the way (preferably with showers, but not a requirement)? We intend on planning carefully and making campground reservations ahead of time. We'd like to stay in areas where there is plenty of adventure and/or active things to do (not interested in fishing though).

To help us narrow down some of the hundreds of campsites that are along the way, some more information would be very helpful.

How much time do you have for this trip? How much of that will be at your destination and on the road? Specific areas where you know you want to stop or visit (the coast, inland mountains, national parks, etc)? Are you tent camping or RVing/do you need hookups? Do you prefer private campgrounds or public sites?

For the record, California state parks have become expensive in the last few years (less funding from the state). With some pre-planning, you can find less expensive camping accommodations, some even with showers.

If you don't need hookups and don't mind a showerless evening, try national forest campgrounds. The sites are usually very pretty, nicely laid out, with water faucets within a short walk and a parking slot for a reasonable fee. When we tent-camped, or used a pop-up without hookups, national forest campgrounds were our favorites.
