We just received a press release for an epic motorcycle ride starting in Las Vegas next June. This is the ultimate "speed run" -- Don't try this....
Darrell W. Rall, Sr., a Grand Trustee with the international FOE, will be the focal point of “Iron Eagle: 2012 Mobilizing to Defeat Diabetes.” The charity motorcycle ride sets a lofty goal – a record for timed endurance by riding 25,000 miles in 25 days or less. According to the Guinness World Book of Records, the closest record is 19,431 miles in 19 days, 8 hours and 30 minutes which involved aggregate ride time and circumnavigation over a greater period of days. Apparently, his goal is to only be on the road for 18 hours a day... You do the math... That's going to be some feat!

Won't he get bored the rest of the day when he's not riding ? [kidding]

I live for the open road and love a challenge, but I am having trouble getting my head around this attempt !! On a motorbike too !! I reckon they would have to lower me onto the bike, locked in a fixed seating position by day 4 and hoist me off it by day 5.

I know these guy's do a lot of preparation and training for these rides and learn to know when to quit, as said, don't try this at home !

I really thought that Guinness had stopped certifying records like this because of the danger level and potential harm to both the person attempting the feat and everyone else in their path.

Side note: the CEO of my current employer (Kaiser Permanente) just sent out in his weekly email to the troops the information that we hold 7 Guinness World Records. Our rationale for getting these is to generate health-related news articles, to bring visibility to healthy actions people should be taking.

For those not familiar with the Kaiser system, prevention is a key part of the total program, hence the emphasis on tests, vaccinations, etc.

Started contracting in Jan 2010; went 'employee' last August. Biggest IT environment I've ever worked in (by a factor of 10, and I used to think I'd worked in some large shops) and also the shortest commute I've ever had (10 miles roundtrip to the facility I work out of).

This is the big leagues/high stakes IT. KP has fully converted all medical records to online, all hospitals and medical office buildings are online, significant online capability to members, from checking test results to ordering meds, to scheduling visits, to emailing doctors (directly)... IT messes up and people's healthcare is impacted. Sobering.

The KP system is unique in that it's one stop shopping for healthcare: the healthplan (insurance), doctors, hospitals, labs, pharmacies are all integrated and exclusive to each other. Makes possible economies of scale. We only operate in Washington, Oregon, CA, CO, OH, GA and parts of the greater Washington D.C. area.

The other unique thing about KP is the fact that we have a huge member base whose records are all computerized in an integrated system. Allows us to do research on what treatments and medications are most effective, using more data and with less effort than most clinical trials. Not applicable for everything done in a clinical trial, but we've learned a lot about what works and what doesn't, which can both improve patient care, and lower the cost of that care (you spend the money where it works). Called "evidence-based medicine".
