Hey looking for some good eating stops on interstate 40, trying to find eating spots we don't have in Texas

The food apeal is not as important as the places to eat. Really we just looking more for [When you pass thru there did you stop and eat at ????????????] Thanks again!

The reason why it is difficult to get a good response to a question like yours in a forum like this is pretty simple: First hand experience.

This forum is built around providing first hand information, much more than trying to list off what's in numerous guidebooks. There are thousands of restaurants along the way, and realistically, the membership of this forum has only sampled a tiny tiny fraction. Even of the ones people have been to, restaurants open/close/change ownership so frequently that a great restaurant today could be a mediocre dump by next week. That's why the best advice we typically can give in a situation like this is to "ask the locals", who will have that essential first hand info.

You might get some good responses, but you do need to temper your expectations because such requests are really not our forte.

I'll note with this response - I'm not a big fancy eater - I'm generally a $15 dollar a plate qualifies as a nice meal type of person.

The Big Texan Steakhouse in Amarillo is always a must stop for us. Is it the best food? No - but it just seems like something you have to do in Amarillo.

My wife loves the Village Inn. I'm sure they have a couple in Texas, but they're not prevalent in the DFW area. We always go to the one off University in Albuquerque. Amazing pie. Might be just a dessert stop though. Food is average at best otherwise.

I'm also a fan of Del Taco on the road. They don't have many of those in the metroplex (they have like one in the metroplex) - and 3 tacos for $1.09 that are pretty darn good make me happy.

Just some thoughts.. Gallup has a couple mexican restaurants we've had as well that are pretty good - one is like 80 years old and a little scary, but if you can get past that, the food is pretty good.

Here is a map with some good, reliable places in Albuquerque.

My wife loves the Village Inn. We always go to the one off University in Albuquerque. Amazing pie. Might be just a dessert stop though. Food is average at best otherwise.

Next time you’re in that area try the Range Café, across the street and one block east.

A few more places I’ve been to over the last year or so:

Grants / Milan, NM

El Cafecito – I’ve been here once. Can’t remember exactly what I had, but it was good enough that I would go back.

WOW! Diner – in Milan, NM at exit 79, across from the Petro truck stop. Been here twice. Had a pretty decent lunch, and a good dessert. Nice, clean place and the service has always been good.

Santa Rosa, NM

Comet II Drive In – of the three places that I’ve been to in Santa Rosa, this has been the best. Had the Huevos Rancheros special, which was pretty good. The service was good as well. Only thing that I didn’t care for was their salsa – really watery.

Silver Moon Café – this place gets a lot of good reviews, so I gave it a try. Had the carne adovada plate, and boy was it disappointing. No heat, and really just dull and flavorless. I’ll try something off the “American” side of the menu, like a sandwich or something, if I go back. No problems with the service, everybody was pretty nice.

Joseph’s Bar & Grill – also gets a lot of good reviews. Not sure why. The food wasn’t anything great (especially the relleno), and the service was borderline rude. I know that any place can have a bad day once in a while, but I probably won’t bother going back.

How timely, Howard! Here we are, sitting in a motel in Santa Rosa, NM, and wondering where we should go for dinner. Debated between Silver Moon (our hotel is nearby), Joseph's, and the Dairy Queen (also nearby). When my husband quits snoozing, I'll read him your reviews.

We were just through Abq today. I tried to call a friend of ours, but missed him.

UPDATE: Try Santa Fe Grill in Santa Rosa. Our hotel recommended it, and even had a sample menu (without prices) to look at. The prices were reasonable, the food was good, and the service was impeccable. (Admittedly we were there at 5:00 and were about the only people in the place for the first 20 minutes.) My hubby had steak-shrimp-fries-vegie for $18, and I had the 1/2 Stuffed Sopapilla and chips. The chips were excellent, though the salsa thick and a bit more spicy than I'm used to. We had thought about going to DQ for dessert, but decided we were too full!

Also - I noticed that Seasons' in Albuquerque got left out of the ABQ list. The dinner floor may be pricey, but the bar serves food and at lower prices. Last year, we took our Albuquerque friend to dinner there - he had just lost his wife - we gave him the choice of where to go. He chose Seasons' (he knows everybody there). The green chili cheeseburger was so good - and I ended up taking 1/2 of it back to the hotel with me and had it for lunch the next day.
