  1. Default San Fran--Chicago on I-80

Hi, all. I have to relocate to Chicago in the fall from San Francisco. Very depressing. I've decided to use I-80 to get there as quickly as possible. I've already done a roadtrip in the opposite direction using US-50/I-90 for most of the way to San Fran a few years ago. I was wondering if anyone can suggest some great places to stop along the way to Chicago. Even off the beaten path a bit (maybe 40-50 radius from I-80). Most importantly, good places to sleep (maybe a B&B), EAT!!, and natural or man-made sites. And ways to survive the drive through NV, WY and NE would be welcome. This trip will be at the beginning of September. Thanks.

    Welcome!

"As quickly as possible" while still being safe is 4 days, with overnights near Wells NV, Cheyenne WY, and Omaha NE. This would not really allow any time for sightseeing or any detours. How many days can you allow?

Yes, as safely as possible, so maybe 4-6 days. I wouldn't want to drive more than 8-9 hours per day. Include stopovers for leisurely lunch, dinner, and breakfast. Nothing hectic. Work is paying, so time is not a problem. Also, if there are US highways that are more interesting to travel down (I've done US-50), then I'm open to that as well.

    Default Further afield ?

For road trip attractions you can search for them in the tool bar above.

    (maybe 40-50 radius from I-80).
You can do exactly this in the Map centre above.

You want to get there as quickly as possible, but at a leisurely pace with perhaps a little exploring ? I get what you are saying but would I70 be a possibility ? Sure it might take a little longer, but if you can stretch it out to 6 days you could make it quite a memorable trip. Perhaps through Yosemite on CA120 over the Tioga pass and through Tonopah on US6, NV 395 [ET Highway] and across to Cedar City and I15 to I70. Zion NP, Cedar breaks NM, Arches/Canyonlands NP [Moab] Colorado NM, RMNP are a few suggestions as to where you could get of I70, which is a very scenic Interstate in itself. You won't get around them all but it could make for an interesting trip.

    NV 395 [ET Highway]
    That's NV-375!

If you go that way, don't forget Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef. However, if you start adding all the wonderful Utah parks, you are going to quickly run out of time.
