Default California for 1 week only

    Hi!

Been doing a ski season in whistler and am planning a weeks sunny trip around California before i head back to Scotland.

I'm arriving in La on the 1st of may and fly back to Canada a week later on the 8th. We'd thought about driving straight out of LA up the coast to san fran, Then over to yosemite and back to La for the 7th. I'm just overwhelmed about what we should try and see and best way to split up time.

Also, were planning on renting a sports car for the last day / night so suggestions for a short scenic 1 day blast with nice roads would also be great.

Thanks in advance for any advice

    Freddie

    Welcome!

I would reverse the direction of travel - go from LA to Yosemite to SF, then back to LA. That way, the scenic pullouts along the coast will be on your side of the road.

However, be aware that the coast highway through Big Sur is presently closed by landslides and you will have to check on the status just before you leave SF.

Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !

There are indeed a lot of possibilities and much will depend on how much time you want to spend in LA and SF and how much time travelling. It's the most popular topic on the forum so looking around a little will show up thousands of results. To get you started here are some of our favourite threads. Apart from the above mentioned condition of Highway 1, if you have any plans of going across the Eastern side of the Sierra's [Yosemite to Death valley via CA120 AKA >Tioga pass is popular] the Tioga pass and other mountain passes will be closed due to winter snow accumulation on the high ground. If Death valley/Vegas is on your radar at all you can still head around the Southern end of the mountains via Bakersfield/Lake Isabella area.

If you are talking about an 'exotic' car rental company for your sports car day out, Vegas has a few company's who provide them and there are some good stretches of open road and Death valley to consider.

You would enjoy a sports car from LV a lot more than LA - a lot less time-consuming to get out of town and find some fun roads.
