Travelling from Australia to Dallas then to Chicago then Route 66

Hi All, I hope I now have the correct forum. Just hoping to get some advise, my wife and I will be travelling from Australia during April/May to do some driving around the USA and hoping I can get some advise on the time I need to do this trip. We will be starting our road trip in Dallas, after arriving in LAX staying for one night then flying to Dallas, staying 2 nights before we leave. We want to drive to Memphis, Nashville, Indianapolis and Chicago to start on the Route 66, we also want to stay in Vegas for about 5 nights before ending our trip in California. We don't intend to do any "off road" but want to be able to have a good look around whilst doing this trip, we have 40 days in all from start to finish, will this give us enough time to achieve an enjoyable trip. Also are there areas of Route 66 that should be skipped due to "nothing really to see".

Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !

You have a nice amount of time to do some exploring around the country and I would encourage you to search the forums and road trip planning pages above where you will find all sorts of info and route planning pages such as the Map centre.

The first thing you need to know is that route66 was decommissioned years ago and replaced largely by the Interstate system. Some parts of the old route are quite straight forward and easy to find and other parts not so. You will find a whole section of RTA dedicated to route 66 here which is full of useful links. There is a lot to be found along old 66 and the nostalgia has many people tracing it's path, which is fine if that is what you want to do, but I would also suggest you look at other options, such as the National parks of Colorado and Southern Utah on route to the Grand canyon, and compare all your options.
