Thanks for all these thoughts, Foy and SouthWest Dave, I will be doing some more planning over the weekend and will have a look at all these suggestions.
Thanks again!

Here are three photos of the “Going to the Sun Road” about mid June some years back a few days after opening. Have to agree with your wife, the snow does add to the scenic magnificence of the mountains.
Melting snow makes for an exciting time. In a red "jammer" bus but private vehicles were also using the road at the time.

On the top where the snow was much thicker.

Once travelled from Denver to Jackson Hole taking the road to Rawlins (the Wyoming Frontier Prison) is well worth a visit on the way. Took the road to Lander staying overnight (Sink Canyon National Park) then via Dubois (classic western town – Butch Cassidy and all that) and then over Togwotee Pass – glorious scenery and a route part of a Rand McNally best of the road route. Mostly off the beaten track which adds to the trip.
On your way back you wish to visit Mount Rushmore (Keystone is a good stop) so consider these place on the way. Devils Tower National Monument – ET fame), Badlands National Park, Crazy Horse Memorial and The Mammoth Site at Hot Springs.
Have a great trip.
