Planning an east coast trip this Summer; spending few days in Newyork, driving to Washington DC.

From Washington D.C to Niagara falls: are there important places to cover during this road trip?
What is the best place for a night stay about 5-6 hours from D.C in this route?

After Niagara falls & Toronto, to get to New York which is route with most coverage? Can we cover Boston, New port, etc., and get to NY?

Would like to cover few more important places, and as many States as reasonably worth in about 4 days between Niagara and New York.
