    Default after those clues...

... and a little cruising on Google Earth; appears to be "9-mile Canyon Road", approaching 395.

Behind you is the Golden Trout Wilderness, ahead Owens Valley.

The road changes names a lot; Kennedy Meadows Road, Sherman Pass Road, ...

A VERY little known X-Sierra route between Tioga and Walker Passes.

Thanks for the clue (and yet ANOTHER road I have to check out in person someday)!

Default It's the southern most crossing of the Sierra Nevada

It's an all paved road -- although there are a few potholes. That photo above is the descent down into the Mojave Desert from cool meadows of the Sierra high country behind us...

Midwest Michael & I are the two Moderators I know who've been over the route. And Megan. Here are some more views:

Tall Trees in the high country -- nearly 8000 feet high (seen bears, other larger critters up here).

It is pretty special. I've driven all of the paved of the Sierra passes doing research for a book. Very nice country!

    Default Lookout Mountain?

I was tempted to suggest someplace in Yosemite, but how about Lookout Mountain in Georgia?

No, Not Lookout Mountain. Right side of the country, though.

    Default Lookout

Well, Mark, Lookout Mountain IS in the northwest corner of Georgia (and adjacent TN and AL). The bare granite is the primary clue the pic is from Stone Mountain, though.
