Suggestions for Cross Country Trip

Hello:

In May, I will be driving across the country with a friend. We will be going from Pennsylvania to Oregon along the southern coast (sort of - picture a smiley face across the USA). We will pass through Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and Idaho.

I am looking for suggestions of where to stay and what to see. We plan on camping out just about every night, so suggestions of cool camping spots would be nice.

We are the adventurous type who like to visit places "off the beaten path." We prefer isolated natural beauty (natural phenomenons, mountains, lakes, etc.).

I would love to hear some suggestions as to beautiful spots that are not crowded with tourists. Unique places to eat are also good, though keep in mind we are poor students!

You also don't mention how long you will be on the road for.

Even with the above info it is difficult to start putting suggestions out there as there would be pages of suggestions. For now you could open the map and take a look at these threads with an A to Z of each state and places to take time out just off each Interstate. There are many thousands of threads that you can find by searching the forums and road trip planning pages [above in the green tool bar].

National parks and State parks offer great locations for camping.

Have a look around and start dotting the map and when you get an idea of those places that you wish to see we can help you join the dots together.
