  1. Default Hotel reservation?

    Hi,
I'm driving from NYC to Keystone, CO using I-70. Should I make hotel reservations in advance at logical overnight locations, or should I just stop on the way whenever I get tired? Which would be cheaper?

    Thanks,

    The Moose

    Default Standard Advice

There is no hard and fast answer to this often asked question. It depends on what suits you best. If you really know your schedule and plan to keep to it, there's no reason not to do a little web surfing beforehand and check out the reviews and prices of motels in the areas where you plan to stop. On the other hand, if you want the freedom to go as far as you feel lie on a given day, pulling up short some days, going practically forever on others, then you'll just take pot luck with whatever you find. You may not find the best or cheapest that way, but that might be a small price to pay for the freedom it gives you.

I recommend getting the green hotel guides that are located at nearly every rest stop, they list hotels along whatever route (I was also on I-70) and give the exit #'s and amenities available. I would typically call a few hours ahead to a few different ones in a range of exits to see if they had vacancy for that night I did 4 overnights this way and averaged about $40 per night. Helpful Hint... stay away from the Budget Motor Lodge in Abilene, KS... yikes!!

    Good Luck
