Speaking with the locals.
I make it a point of wherever I travel to speak with the locals, rather than get my imformation from the internet or books. The locals know better than anyone where to go to see/do what you are interested in. I never plan all these things before my trip.
Very rarely have I received anything other than a warm welcome.

This is only compounded by the facts that 1) 'Telling someone where to go' can be polite when taken literally, and as terribly impolite when said with a certain tone of voice. Unfortunately the printed word does not convey tone of voice. and 2) We have an Aussie talking to a Brit on an American website.
