Atlanta to New York (state) then to Maine

My parents have 3-4 more weeks traveling the US (they are visiting from the UK with their little westie!). They leave Atlanta tomorrow and would like to do a more scenic ride but also get up to the North and see some amazing things.

So far I have this:

Atlanta - Great Smoky Mountains National Park, TN - Cumberland Falls, KY ...

They have spent a lot of time coming through Shenandoah and Virginia so I am trying to stay away from repeating that course. As for New York State and Maine, NH etc - I have no idea. They have the dog, so places that are dog friendly are great.

Anyone have any good ideas?

Note - my mum has told me she wants to see the St. Lawrence River so I am going to try to build st Lawrence islands national park into the itinerary BEFORE they turn right to maine.

Mammoth Cave National Park is also in Kentucky, just northeast of Bowling Green.
