From there should i keep heading north to Davenport or back east through Bloomington and Springfied to get to Chicago?
It depends on how much time you have and what you want to see. Going through Springfield and Bloomington will take about 5 hours and is not particularly scenic. Staying on the river road to Davenport turns it into an all-day evolution. Davenport to downtown Chicago is about a 3 hour drive on I-80 or I-88, about 2.5 hours into the western suburbs.

Thanks guys, you've been super helpful.

We plan on doing a bit of hiking be it in a park or up the mountains so will pack appropriately for the weather, we're used to a bit of rain being from Ireland!
I guess we'll make our decision when we go along or when we get to St Louis, if it's going well and we're enjoying the road we'll try to get in as much of the river road as we can if now we might cut back to Chicago.

thanks for all your help really looking forward to it now

Have fun. I wouldn't call myself an expert on Europe or on Ireland, I spent a week in France and a week in Spain but I would imagine that long road trips are probably not something most people get to experience there. But in the Americas, especially with the Interstate system in the US you can just set off in just about any direction you want and just drive.

one other question guys, what night are high school football games on generally, wouldn't like to go see one if possible, is there a website with fixtures etc?

I presume you are talking about American football correct? (Not soccer)

I think almost all high school football games are on a Friday night. Football in the United States usually has High school playing on Friday, Universities playing on Saturday, and Professional on Sunday with one game on Monday.

Unfortunutly I think you may have a difficult time finding a central place where you can find what football games are going on and where for high school. The best thing you could do is to figure out what area you will be in, look up the local high schools and look up their individual football schedules.

The good news is that for most of the season, the teams usually play teams that are pretty close by. So if you get into a town you could probaby find out from the locals about their high school team(s). If none are playing at home, in all likelyhood they are playing somewhere less then an hour away.

    Default seasonal

The only problem you will likely have is that the High School Football season is already starting to wrap up in many places. I suspect most places will still be in the playoffs when you arrive, so you can probably find a game somewhere, but it will be more limited than if you were here in Sept. or Oct.

There isn't a good place to find a national schedule, but if you search for "High School Association"and the state name, you'll probably find a schedule. Otherwise, be looking at the local newspapers which are usually good about putting out schedules.

I'd suggest that you try to get to a college game, but it looks like you've already got plans for the Saturday that you'll be on the road.
