RV 9 day round trip,from SanDiego to what not to miss in Arizona

From San Diego to San Diego in 9 days in an RV. Should we head east to cross to Arizona or north east through California then Vegas to Arizona? Travelling with my wife and our 2 kids (9 and 6).What not to miss in Arizona? Don't want to be driving 6 hours a day. 2 to 3 max. Is it possible? Can you help?

Two to three hours of driving per day will allow plenty of time for exploring on foot with the trade-off that you won't get very far from San Diego.

<a href = "http://www.desertusa.com/wildflo/wildupdates.html">Anza Borego</a> has some nice campgrounds and the spring wildflowers might be in bloom by now.

Rock formations in Joshua Tree National Park are also the destination of choice this time of year.

For your 2nd or 3rd night I would recommend stopping at the <a href = "http://www.roadtripamerica.com/places/mojavepreserve.htm">Hole-in-the-Wall</a> campground near Kelso, California. Very cool rocks and desert places to wander. The dunes at Kelso are awesome at sunset.

From overnights in Las Vegas you can check Death Valley National Park and Hoover Dam.

Arizona: Check out this forum for suggestions to stay around the Grand Canyon and I would certainly urge a visit to Monument Valley. Your return trip could include Sedona, Jerome, Phoenix and then westward back to San Diego.

About 2 hours north of Phoenix is Flagstaff and Sedona. I think you would enjoy Sedona. Lots of beautiful scenery. Flagstaff is the highest point on old route 66, and it's a pretty neat old town. From Flag, you could take route 40 west and hook up with the 15 south to home.

from Sedona en route to Phx (scenic route) i went to an old ghost town, turned artist community, called Jerome. worth the trip if you can swing it.

One option is Pioneer, AZ. Pioneer is a "living history" museum just north of Phoenix on I-17. It is a collection of historic buildings reassembled on the site into a 19th century town. Check it out at
