having lived in california most of my life, i can say that US 101/ CA 1 is a special drive. avoid I-5 at all costs, it is bland and soulless. be sure to check out monterey, eureka, and big sur.

I was glad to read about your opinion of Hwy 101 vs. Hwy 5.
Coming south from Seattle, what's the best Hwy to cut over to Hwy 101? We were planning on going down as far as Eugene or Florence & cut over on Hwy 38 or Hwy 126 to Hwy 101....which would be best??
What are the best sites along the way??
What about Korbel, Umpqua Lighthouse, others????
How much of the Redwood forest do we see from the highway??
Or do we have to go into a park to see them??
Any input would be appreciated....Thanks....

I actually enjoy driving I-5, but mostly it is because of the relative speed through which one can move through OR & WA. If time is not a problem -- by all means, move to the coast as soon as possible. For instance, Long Beach, WA is pretty cool, if you like driving on the beach and the world hq for kite flying is there. The toll bride into Astoria is great!

Without question the finest state park system in the lower 48 is found in Oregon -- Every single one is worth a stop. My personal favorite is Beverly Beach near Siletz. If you like cheese -- the factory tour at Tillamook is fun.

Redwoods grow where redwoods like the cool moist conditions -- the biggest ones are in parks -- but you will be able to find plenty on the side of the canyons that lead to the ocean.

Traveling on Hwy-101 is SLOW going -- but beautiful!

SOUTH bound: We would head east into Montana, head south on 15 by Yellowstone. 15 is high gear right into San Diego with so much breath taking scenory and so many marvelous side trips (for any tast or interest) that you may not make it to SDA.
North bound: stay close to 1 & 101 north bound puts you on the shore side on the narrow windy parts and again lots to see and do. It will be crowded and people can be less than courteous around the metro area's

How long does it take to drive from Riverside, California to Seattle, WA by driving 101???

If I use I5 it's about 20 hours and 1200 miles.

I realize this is a really old post to be responding to...but the long bridge over the Columbia River into Astoria (about 5 miles long) is no longer a toll-bridge. Totally free and totally cool!
