making it to Memphis

First thanks again for all the great advice and suggestions

Took 40 and will get to Memphis soon (i hope) --took 9 days from LA...
vapor lock and a blown radiator has slowed us down and my dog is miserable. Even starting at 5AM it is hot by 10... not fond of driving in the dark--
So what do you all think about 22 out of Memphis-- avoiding the bridge issue as suggested -- getting to Birmingham --then 20 to Atlanta ??

Remember no AC and top speed of 60.

Id like to avoid Atlanta but i dont want to take an undivided hwy to do that.

Take the I-55 bridge, that's your only choice. 2 choices from there.

1. Take I-55 to I-240 to US-78 (4+ lane divided with traffic lights) which becomes I-22.
2. (Longer but less traffic and no traffic lights) Stay on I-55 to I-269 to I-22.

Now, going to Tampa and avoiding Atlanta? From Birmingham, take I-65 south to Montgomery. Take US-80 or I-85 (both 4+ lane divided) to US-231 to I-10 to I-75. US-231 is 4+ lane all the way, some divided, some undivided.

glc-- great suggestion I65 to 231 to I10.

We made it to FL in 13 days

I65 was brutal-- the road was good but very heavy traffic- 231 was a delight

I 10 was good except when the passenger wiper fell off-- Actually the truck did really good- cruised at 60mph-

and DonnaR57-- the I40 was a great suggestion-
even so it was miserably hot

AC buck your posts encouraged me to look for a shipper --the range was 6100 to 2700 but the 2700 bid came in after i left. They would have bumped me to 3grnd for sure.


Everywhere i stopped or slept the truck gathered people--"i took a truck just like that to the prom" or My grandfather had one of those, I love it" that was the fun part-

Some of the motels i stayed in were not very good- and i had no choice as many cities were sold out-- filthy and spent cartridges adorned some of the rooms.

I'm an engineer and a good mechanic for 1952-1975 vehicles-- if the powers that control the forum or members would like a post on how to manage taking an old vehicle on a long road trip i could do one- but i'm not sure where it would go... there are some things you really need to know

Thanks for the update. Glad you made the cross country trip safely, even though the dog didn't enjoy it by the sounds of things !
