Digging around for a sniff of info on whats happening right now on the pass didn't produce much in the way of an update but I did stumble upon this article which I found quite interesting with input from some Caltran veterans.
Dave.
Link provided by Southwest_Dave gave me "This content is only available to subscribers."
Searching for Tioga on Reno Gazette website gave me some other links including pictures at https://www.rgj.com/picture-gallery/...ss/7245241002/ with subtitle "As drought conditions worsen, Caltrans workers cleared Tioga Pass Road (in) just three days when normally it takes the better part of a month." There is another story marked Subscribers only that is titled "Caltrans crew battle rockfall rather than snow as drought condition prevail in Sierra mountain passes.
I returned from Mammoth over 9624' Sonora Pass last Friday after two days of Spring skiing at Mammoth. I did not see sign at bottom of Tioga Pass lit up saying closed so I pulled into the gas station at the bottom of Pass where a Firefighter confirmed it was still closed and thought it would be for about a week to allow bicycles a chance to ride it car-free.
I was thinking that this Thursday may have been a better guess than Friday 5/21 that I have, but low temps in the teens are predicted for Friday and Saturday with a 50% change of snow so Tioga Pass could stay closed into next week. https://opensnow.com/location/mammothmountain predicts 4" on Friday and 2" on Saturday.
Maybe I slipped through the net as I can still visit the link and I haven't subscribed !
It was an article including interviews with some long serving Caltran workers with regards to clearing the road up to the gates of Yosemite NP and basically how low the snow pack was this year, the lowest seen for many years by them, but freeze and thaw cracking rocks was still a problem.
We still wait for an update regarding the opening, but night time temperatures remain well below freezing and there are a few snow showers possible for Friday and Saturday so maybe not just yet !
Dave.
Maybe I had already used my free pages at Reno Gazette.
CalTrans District 9 Facebook page says "ATTN DRIVERS: Due to the incoming storm, Caltrans will close Sonora Pass/State Route 108 at NOON on Thursday, May 20. Monitor Pass/State Route 89 will remain open unless the severity of the storm necessitates its closure." So instead of Tioga opening, Sonora and Ebbetts, the two Sierra passes N of Tioga will temporarily close.
I saw on the Yosemite National Park Facebook page that Tioga Pass will tentatively open on Thursday, May 27th at 8 am and then confirmed it on the Yosemite NP website. https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/wroads.htm
Looks like it might open one day and two hours before my prediction! Bummer...all I can do is hope that it snows enough to delay it a day! ;)
Utahtea
It would appear to be that Tioga pass did open this morning as planned. If this is the case Utahtea would have just missed out on the prize but will be crowned the new DcTpp (Darn close Tioga pass prognosticator) although we just need official confirmation as always.
It also appears there will road works throughout the summer that will cause some delay and continue in 2022.

Tioga Road Rehabilitation will begin when the road opens in 2021 and will extend until the road closes for winter. The project will extend from Olmsted Point east toward Tioga Pass. This project will continue into spring and summer 2022.

An august assemblage of road trip sages are in the dcTPP group!
Rats! And congrats to UtahTea. I seem to've limped into the realm of close, but no cigar...
