    Hi thanks for all replies
might add a few more days to our rental .As for driving we are used to long distances In Australia . The suggestions have been helpful .
we have seen Yosemite ,lake taho , sequoia .plus more ,So maybe a drive thhrough Yellowstone .then onto Glacier park .
Another reason is to follow the course of the Rocky mountaineer train . Rather than the train itself .
Too expensive .just like our Indian Pacific train and the Ghan
    besides I love driving
    Thanks again to all

Come now Ray, if you have previously driven in North America, you must be aware that there is no comparison. In the last six months I have taken two short trips through Victoria; driven to Goulburn and back (last weekend); driven to Port Hedland and back, and I have to say that none of the experience comes anywhere near the quarter million miles I have driven in North America - from the Mexican border to the Arctic Ocean in Alaska.

    There's simply no comparison!

    hi
The scenery may vary to north america .But I dont call Melbourne Darwin a short trip .or Melbourne Perth .Two years ago drove across the USA via chicago New york and down to key west .
Previously to that Out as far as Monument valley and nearly every National park tween there and LA
Melb -Adelaide is a regular run for us
Last year 10000 kms FNQ and back to home. 4 weeks via a lot of different places

not sure on your point "There is no comparison " scenery ,distance ?

Ray, the comparison is the ease and the state of the road network. So much variety. Go to Perth you have ONE road, and Darwin is not much better. It is the ease of driving and the facilities along the way, in North America, which makes it so suited to roadtrips.

Agree with that to a point .
Australia is great for road trips QLD, Vic .Tas . Sa WA all of them never found facilities lacking .
I am 74 so quite a few million KMS covered throughout the world .Work ,Holidays etc .That does not cover flying

but as you know we dont have the population .
be pointless Having two roads to Perth , Ceduna to Norseman one road
    then options change .
well there is Via Alice, Australias longest short cut
The beauty of Oz is less traffic .
