Default I-70 west of Denver, planned closure 12/18/19

Recent rockfall along the I-70 corridor west of Denver has closed the road several times.

I've seen that CDOT plans to close the road entirely for many hours on Dec 18 in order to do blasting and cleanup.

Since that's near the holiday travel window I figured I should post this warning. Of course schedule is subject to change.

Default Happy Holidays to us all!

Thanks for this post. What a mess such a road closure will cause!

The biggest issue to be concerned about is that there isn't an alternate route thru the corridor. Detour could be hundreds of miles on two-lane roads.

That's probably true. If you're planning to come from out of town, the choices may be slim.

When in the Denver area, we saw the local reports about the I-70 closure west of town, near Idaho Springs. We were so glad we'd gone "the long way" to get up there, and were planning to return a different way.

Today is the day and CDOT is keeping the schedule to close I-70 for rockfall mitigation.

Looks like it will be closed for 3 hours - 9 to noon.

    That doesn't seem too bad.

The TV news reported that CDOT exceeded their planned time by a mere 100%. 6 hrs vs 3.

    (That shouldn't be a surprise......)

Default Yeah, but is IS open!

I consider somewhat amazing that they got the road reopened at all today.
