    Default Senior Discounts

If you are 50+ years old, there are discounts available at many chain restaurants, grocery stores, retail apparel and other stores, car rental agencies, train-bus-airlines, and more. In many cases, the establishment will not automatically give you the discount, you have to ask for the senior price. This list is by no means perfect - places change their policies seemingly overnight, but I have the attitude, "it never hurts to ask!" Also, some places require membership in AARP, which you can join for a nominal fee at age 50.

(55+)(60+)(62+) and (65+) indicate the age required for the senior discount. I've discovered that they will seldom ask for any proof that you are of age, especially if you appear in front of them and look as though you could meet their requirement.

Many, if not all parks grant this to those not eligible for the life time pass, who have purchased the America the Beautiful Pass (unofficial!).

Thanks for making this a sticky!

My mom always shops at Fry's on Senior Day.

I should probably have added the reminder that these are almost always done quietly, and some of these have outlets in areas where discounts are discouraged or even prohibited. Some of them do them anyway (I have gotten the Taco Bell discount in an area where discounts for seniors are discouraged).

It's frustrating, when you're traveling, to eat out, stay healthy and not come home with extra pounds. We usually carry the snack bag and a cooler in the vehicle with us, and carry a little bit of equipment to make a meal in a hotel room if we can. But when we are on the move, and stop at a restaurant, wise choices can be made if one thinks ahead.

Lately, when out to eat, I take half of what's on the plate and ask for a to-go box right up front. Hopefully, the next motel room will have a microwave where I can heat that meal up. For salads, I carry low-fat dressings in packets in my purse, and ask for their dressing either to be eliminated or at least placed on the side. I order either unsweetened tea or water to drink, and never order dessert. If there is a senior menu, it's where I start perusing. I look for words like "grilled" or "roasted" (rather than "fried" or "breaded"), calorie counts are very helpful, and I have occasionally asked for a small change for me. Most restaurants are happy to comply as long as the request is reasonable.

So here's a list of chain restaurants that have Senior/Fit Fare/Healthy/Small Appetite menus:

Applebee's – limited selection “Lighter Fair”

    Carrows – “Golden 55 Menu”

Cheesecake Factory – “SkinnyLicious”, also “Small Plates”

    Chili's - “Lighter Choices”

Claim Jumper – Vegetarian and Gluten Free menus, soup and salads

    Coco's - Club 55, Gluten-Free

Culver's – limited selection, “Mindful Choices”

Denny's - “55+” and “Fit Fare” menu choices

Golden Corral – buffet has lots of healthy choices, gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian and a good soup and salad bar. Calories are listed by the labeling sign, in most locations.

    Hooters - “The Light Choice”

Houlihan's – Gluten-Free, soups and salads, and flatbreads.

    IHOP – 55+ menu

Joe's Crab Shack – lots of steamed fish/shellfish, soups, salads.

Macaroni Grill – '600 Calories or Fewer”

Old Chicago Grill – Gluten sensitive, salads and soups menu

Old Country Buffet/some Hometown Buffets/Ryan's – buffets have lots of healthy choices
    Olive Garden - “Light Fare”

    Perkins - “55+ Menu” choices

Pizza Hut – nothing specifically light. Some locations have a pizza and salad bar.

Ponderosa/Bonanza Restaurants – Senior menu, menus vary by location.

Red Lobster – soups and salads menu only. Most locations willing to substitute a different vegetable for the baked potato, if you ask.

Round Table Pizza – nothing specific; some locations have a pizza and salad bar at lunch on variable days of the week (usually weekdays)

Sizzler - “Smaller Plate”; some locations have an impressive soup, salad and other bar

Souplantation/Sweet Tomatoes – The vast majority of the menu is soups and salads, flatbreads and foccacia breads, fat-free frozen yogurt

    TGIFriday's – Gluten Sensitive menu
