Paying attention seems like the biggest no-brainer, but it's amazing how many people lose concentration while driving. At least I don't look at my BlackBerry anymore. I've been trying to pay extra attention to what's going on around me. By anticipating what people are going to do, I can avoid accidents.

Attention has the best ROI (Return On Investment). When you pay him, you immediately make a profit - you didn't get into a wreck or other unpleasant situation. No matter how poor you are, you cannot afford not to pay attention.
Check your vehicle blind spots sometimes. Have someone walk around and see if he disappeared from your mirror. or let other vehicle passes your by while you follow its movement to see if it disappear from you for a second. That second could be a fatal second, need to fix it by moving the mirror or change your habit of looking back. Always look before your move not the other way around. This will reduce your chance of a collision from my experience.
