SW Virginia to Texas Hill Country in 3 days (and return in 3 days)
Hi, all!
I'd love to get suggestions for separate there and back again routes for a mid-July trip. I'd prefer primarily interstate or fast US Highways, but with sufficient side trip diversions or "Must See" places every two to three hours, to keep things interesting for 9- and 5-year-old boys (not to mention their parents). Roadside kitsch, historic sites, geographic and natural wonders would all be of interest. (We are unalterably opposed to on-board DVD players.)
We plan to camp at campgrounds or state parks (so suggestions for these would be helpful, too), and we expect the daily travel distance to be around 400 miles. The obvious general route would be via Tennessee & Arkansas, but also would like a southern route (Dad has been in 49 states. Mississippi is the last one to visit...)
Thanks in advance.

The Obvious (and Not So Obvious)
Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!
There are several greater historic and natural attractions along that general route. The major ones would be Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Shiloh Battlefield (reachable from Nashville via the Natchez Trace and US-64), Mud Island in Memphis, Hot Springs National Park, Crater of Diamonds Sate Park (AR), and the Alamo in San Antonio. Since most of your trip will be along major Interstates, you should have a look at our list of stops along them every 2-3 hours.
