Something to look at - take I-44 through Springfield to Exit 57, take MO-96 (a stretch of original Route 66) through Carthage, west of town take the exit to stay on 96 through Oronogo to MO-141. ...
Check lowclearances.com, they sell a database. They claim that they have 7000 low clearance bridges in the US.
The drive would be more enjoyable if you took some extra time for sightseeing.
Buck, I don't think their father is making the trip, these people are going to see their father who is in NE the way I read it.
Buck's route suggestions are good, except I believe he meant...
I guess the Motel 6 here was *really* bad - I drove by today and it's no longer a Motel 6, it's a Super 7. That has to be really bad to lose the franchise.
Buck recommended the same route as I did, but there's only one hotel and no chain restaurants in York, which is why I recommended Meridian.

If you only have 6 days total, you don't have time to do anything but take the fastest all-Interstate route, and you will have to return the very next day via the same route. This...
It's 13.5 miles south of I-44 via US-65, and there's a shortcut back to I-44 westbound using US-60/MO-360. They are both freeway quality. Almost all restaurants in this neck of the woods are open...
You won't be going anywhere near Sikeston, but there's also a Lambert's in Ozark, which is near Springfield.
Can be done easily in 3 hours via US-191/I-70/UT-24.
It's going to take longer than that if you take UT-12, HIGHLY recommended. About 3 hours with no stops, but you will want to make several...
You don't have to deal with Chicago, just take I-43 to I-39 through Beloit and Rockford to I-55. St. Louis is not a major issue if you take the southeast bypass instead of the northwest bypass -...
Tusayan is at the south entrance, and that's open. The east entrance from Cameron is closed. You will have to go all the way to Flagstaff and cut back. This adds over 80 miles.
For this trip, if you don't have an EZ-Pass, I'd get one! No matter which way you go, if you expect to make this drive using 2 days each way you will be paying a lot of tolls.

Could you please tell us roughly where in Maine you are?
Services are few and far between on US-93/NV-318 between Twin Falls and Las Vegas. Twin Falls would be a good overnight, fill your gas tank. There's services in Wells and Ely, fill your tank in Ely...
Would that be Hertz?
My nephew found this out the hard way. He bought a brand new 31 foot RV trailer to live in while working on a construction site, with plans to keep it for family use. The first time it rained it...
If you are in fact from Groton, avoid Hartford by taking CT-9 to Middletown, then CT-66 to I-691 to I-84 if you are taking my route.
I-90 is almost always an easier drive across the Great Plains and Rockies than either I-80 or I-70. That's why I suggested you head north on I-29 to get to I-90.
I can make a suggestion for a route to take. This route avoids the majority of tolls and large metro areas, and keeps you away from possible lake effect snow. It's also 100% Interstate highway...
What about UT-12 from Capitol Reef to Bryce?
It's not very likely that I-5 would close, but they may require chains unless you have a 4wd/AWD vehicle with "traction tires" and you still have to carry chains for at least 1 axle. If they are...
I don't think I'd want to be out on US-97 in bad weather.
Welcome to RTA!
I'd take Interstate highways/freeways as much as possible. Take I-5 to Portland to I-84, using I-205 to bypass downtown. Take that to I-82 to US-395, go through Kennewick, to...
