Once known as 'Tonopah Springs,' it became a booming mining town after silver was discovered in 1900. Many of the historic buildings still remain from the period when it was known as the 'Queen of the Silver Camps.' Wyatt & Virgil Earp ran the hotel and saloon for a few years. These days much of the commerce arises from another gold rush -- one connected with the Tonopah Test Range for top secret military aircraft.
If you go:
Go underground in the 'Queen of the Silver mines' at 'Tonopah Historic Mining park' and also visit 'Central Nevada Museum'.
