As iconic as any statue in the world, the seated figure of the 16th President of the United States looks out over the National Mall from a memorial built in a classic Greek style. Above him are engraved the words 'In this temple as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the Union, the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever.' The scale of this statue carved from 159 tons of Georgia marble is truly impressive. If Lincoln to stand up he would be 28 feet tall.

      If you go:
The Lincoln Memorial is open to the public 24 hours a day. Rangers are on duty 9.30 am to 11.30 pm.
