The Stony Hill School is the site of the first ever birthday celebration for the 'stars and stripes,' the official USA flag. In 1885, a young teacher at this one-room schoolhouse, chose June 14th to be the American Flag's Birthday, based on a similar proclamation by the Continental Congress in 1777. The celebration eventually led to Flag Day officially becoming a national observance in 1916.
If you go:
A festival celebrating Flag Day and a patriotic program and parade is held each year on the second Sunday of June. Waubeka is also home to the National Flag Day Foundation which sponsors the Americanism Center and museum.
