The 46-mile stretch of California SR 120 that runs from Lee Vining to Yosemite's Crane Flat, better known as Tioga Pass Road, is one of America's great drives. Climbing steeply through the stunning mountain scenery of Lee Vining Canyon, it peaks at 9,945 feet at Tioga Pass, making it the highest road pass in California. With meadows, lakes, sequoia groves, rock domes and mountain views along the way, it's hard to imagine a more scenic, dramatic or varied drive.
If you go:
Tioga Pass is a seasonal route only; when it's closed there is no other eastern entrance/exit to Yosemite. The open season depends on snowfall but is generally from May/June to October/November.
