During its 1870s/80s heyday, the lead and silver mining town of Castle was home to as many as 2000 residents (including, it's said, a certain Calamity Jane). Today its a ghost town, accessible via a dusty but relatively easy 9 mile drive west from Lennep on NF Rd 581. It's a very picturesque site with decaying properties dotted along either side of the road. Most are wooden structures but there are one or two stone buildings. Before you set off, be aware: all buildings are on private land protected by "No Trespassing" signs.
