There are several reasons why Rancho San Rafael Regional Park might be worth a visit. Most famously, it's the site every September of the Great Reno Balloon Race, billed as the world's largest free hot-air balloon event. It's also home of the Wilbur D. May Museum, showcasing the collection of artifacts compiled by a distinguished world traveler. Also here you will find the Wilbur D. May Arboretum and Botanical Garden. And in addition to other typical park amenities, there are some excellent hiking and biking trails, where you might catch a glimpse of the park's resident owls. And be sure to check out the Basque Sheepherder Monument, an impressive 22-foot sculpture paying tribute to the Basque Shepherds who worked in the region, including at the historic ranch that gave the park its name.

      If you go:
The nature trails and Basque Sheepherder Monument are on the north end of the park. Most of the other features are on the south side, including the visitors center, which was originally the ranch house.
