King's Chapel, established in 1686, has been serving Boston in the present building since 1754. Naturally, there is a great deal of history here, and you can glean quite a bit of it by wandering through the chapel and reading the placards. But there is also a history hidden under your feet, and the Bells and Bones Tour will take you down below the chapel to what was once used as a crypt. That practice was discontinued long ago, but the remains are still interred there, and your guide will take you down to this delightfully creepy underground chamber and fill you in on the history of some of the people buried in the little vaulted tombs. The Bells part of the tour entails climbing up a very old staircase to the bell tower, containing a bell cast in 1816 by none other than Paul Revere. And you can actually touch this grand old bell, and even rap it to get a sound out of it.
If you go:
The tour is offered Monday through Saturday at 11, 12, 2 and 3, and on Sunday at 2 and 3. An Architectural Tour is offered daily at 4 PM, as well as Monday through Saturday at 10:15 AM. The chapel is open for self-guided tours Monday through Saturday 10 AM to 5 PM and Sundays 1:30 PM to 5 PM.
