It may be the smallest state, but Rhode Island's magnificent State House is one of the nation's grandest. The self-supporting, marble covered dome is the world's fourth largest (behind St Peter's in the Vatican City, the Minnesota State Capitol and India's Taj Mahal). Highlights include the impressive rotunda, the Gettysburg gun (still containing a cannonball), and the Royal Charter of 1663 granted by King Charles II, guaranteeing Rhode island settlers freedom of religion and the right to govern their colony.

      If you go:
The State House is open to the public Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm except holidays. Free guided tours are offered at 9 am, 10 am, 11 am, 1 pm, and 2 pm.
