With Mt. Charleston towering in the background, the Visitor Gateway is at the entrance to the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area (SMNRA) with miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking, camping and picnic areas. Numerous marked hikes range from easy to strenuous. This "sky island" rising out of the Mojave desert has an amazing variety of plant and wildlife and is much cooler than nearby Las Vegas or the desert floor! Look for ancient bristlecone pine trees at higher elevations.
If you go:
Stop at the Visitor Gateway to pick up maps and other information about the area. RV and tent camping; some campsites can be reserved. Drinking water is available from Memorial Day though Labor Day but otherwise, provide you own. At elevation, winter conditions may prevail so check weather and road conditions before visiting. Pets on leash are permitted.
