Calafia, sometimes also called Califia, was a fictitious black warrior queen who ruled over the mythical Island of California in a novel written by a Spanish author around 1500. This fountain statue of her was erected in downtown Turlock in 2005, and has stood here ever since, despite a drive to have it relocated. Her colorful robe is decked with symbols of the area's rich agricultural heritage.

      If you go:
Calafia is not an indispensable masterpiece that you should go a great distance out of your way for, but if you're going to be in the neighborhood anyway, she's definitely worth checking out.
