This is the 19th of 21 missions established by Franciscan Fathers in California. It was founded in 1804, rebuilt after a major earthquake in 1812 and came close to being burned down during the Chumash Indian revolt of 1824. Surviving political upheavals, the mission was eventually restored and is active today with daily and weekend masses. Self-guided and docent tours are available. The museum houses an extensive collection of religious treasures and artifacts.
