This humble mound in the pristine forests of Cumberland is actually the first monument ever erected for American soldiers. It was originally constructed to mark the mass burial of nine colonial soldiers that were executed on the same site by the Narragansett warriors during King Phillips War. While the mound has changed over the centuries, there has been a rock pile at this site continuously since 1676.

      If you go:
The trail to the monument is a very easy walk and offers picturesque scenery along the way. The trail begins at the rear of the Cumberland Public Library along the chain link fence. The library building was originally a Trappist monastery which dates to 1902 although it looks more like a medieval castle.
