This intersection was once home to the second largest slave market in the South. From 1833-1863 thousands of slaves were housed here in a facility that resembled a prison camp. The market closed after it was seized by Union Soldiers during the Civil War, which then used the facility to house some soldiers, possibly some who had even been sold as slaves from this very location.
If you go:
No buildings from the slave market remain, but a small memorial with chains and shackles in concrete serves as a reminder of the importance of this site. There are also several signs and markers explaining the history of the site and it's impact on Natchez.
