The quiet (and, some might say, appropriately named) town of Sleepy Eye might appear to offer little to delay the passing road tripper but it is actually home to two interesting statues. The first is that of Sleepy Eye himself, a Sioux chief who hunted this area throughout the first half of the 19th century and was said to be a friend of all men. The second is that of the Peanuts character Linus, named after Sleepy Eye native, cartoonist, and friend of Charles M. Schulz, Linus Maurer.
If you go:
The mortal remains of Chief Sleepy Eye (Ish-tak-ha-ba) lie buried beneath an impressive granite obelisk monument a few yards up the road on the other side. Behind this is the historic railroad depot, home to a museum operated by the local historical society.
